How to remove your ex from family photos

To remove your ex from a family photo and keep the kids, describe your ex by their clothing and position, for example “the man on the right in the grey hoodie”. That way it’s clear who should go and who stays. If the first edit isn’t right, the second edit is free.

How to describe your ex when the kids are in the photo

Especially when everyone is close together, mention what makes your ex different from everyone else:

  • Where they are: “the man on the right”, “the woman at the back”.
  • What they’re wearing: “in the grey hoodie”, “in the red coat”.
  • Put both together: “the man on the right in the grey hoodie”.

Be specific enough to tell a parent from a child, like “the man in the grey hoodie” rather than just “the man”.

When your ex is holding or hugging your child

When two people overlap, the edit has to rebuild whatever was hidden behind your ex: an arm, a shoulder, the side of a small face. That’s the hardest case for any tool, so expect it to take more care.

If the first edit doesn’t look right, use the free second edit with a clearer description. And if your ex is still there in a paid edit, tap “Report: person still there” and the credit comes back, up to 3 times every 30 days.

Keeping the dog in the picture

Dogs end up tangled with whoever is holding them: a leash in your ex’s hand, fur against their jacket, a dog curled up on their lap. The advice is the same as with kids. Describe your ex clearly, check the result, and use the free second edit if the dog lost a paw along the way.

Photos of someone you’ve lost

Sometimes the photo that matters most is the only one you have of a parent or grandparent, and your ex happens to be in it. Take your time with that one.

For a single sentimental photo, volunteer editors on r/PhotoshopRequest may suit you better, since a person can work on it by hand. Just know that posting there is public.

Keep the originals for your kids

One day your kids may want the photos exactly as they were. Uploading a photo to Remove Your Ex doesn’t change the copy on your phone or computer, so you can keep the originals for them and still have edited versions for yourself.
